The Stitched Shibori Workshop: Practicing Nui Techniques 6/23/26 + 6/30/26

The Stitched Shibori Workshop: Practicing Nui Techniques 6/23/26 + 6/30/26
In this two-part workshop, you’ll explore stitch-resist techniques to create intricate, one-of-a-kind patterns on cloth.
In the first session, we’ll make a series of stitch “samplers” to practice six traditional Japanese nui techniques. Each piece will transform as you dip it into an organic indigo vat, revealing rich, unique patterns in deep natural blue.
You’ll take your samplers home as references and use them to design your own composition on a cotton bandana.
In the second session, we’ll reconvene to dye your finished bandanas in the indigo vats and share insights on process, pattern, and design.
No prior indigo dyeing experience is necessary. You’ll learn stitch-resist methods and the fundamentals of working with an indigo vat.
Each student will leave with a set of stitched samplers, materials to continue exploring shibori at home, and a notebook with instructions for creating your own indigo vat. Snacks and beverages will be provided.
