philosophy and Values

PIANO NOBILE is an architecture, interiors, and landscape design studio based in Seattle, Washington. We build projects driven by narrative, lived experience, and the profound belief in the beauty of everyday life which draws us together. Our multidisciplinary studio works closely with clients throughout the research, design, and construction process to create environments that are unique and personal, grounded and authentic.

Piano nobile is an Italian term we first heard in Venice, where life and work take place a few steps above sea level, on the second floor. Building community, layering together the materials of a well-lived life, connecting to history, character  -- we stack these elements together like rooms, rising above the busy street. We take our name from the upstairs loft where we started our studio.

Environment and Ethics

We are committed to responsible and ethical design in every project. Sustainable building systems, renewable, long-lasting materials, and forward-thinking, conscientious design are central to our mission.  Our multidisciplinary approach allows us to integrate thoughtful design and prioritize the shared values we hold.

In Community: Teaching and Continuing Education

Although 2024 marks our 18th year in business, we still consider ourselves to be students, always open to radical new ideas.  A love of both history and contemporary design gives us endless paths for discovery.  With each project, we imagine the voices of our favorite artists, as well as the teachers who helped us along the way. As teachers, principal designers Nick and Isabelle Robertson had the great privilege of developing and implementing college level design courses for five years (2015-2020) at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, an experience which continues to inspire their work today.
